TAPCAVE is named after the workshop where the real work happens. Not a brand, not an acronym, not a logo a committee approved. A place where things get designed, experimented with, and tested — and handed off only once the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed. You hired us to do a job, not to supervise our own quality control.
The model
There is no account manager between you and the person doing the work. No intake coordinator, no escalation path, no tier-one support reading from a script. When you describe a problem, the person you're talking to is the person who will solve it.
Large MSPs make large promises. If you're not one of their flagship accounts, you find out what those promises are worth the first time something goes wrong — your ticket sits in a queue, the account manager handles scheduling, and the tech who eventually shows up has never seen your environment. TAPCAVE is deliberately smaller: one person who already knows your setup, has an opinion about it, and answers email and returns calls promptly.
This also means the work belongs to you when it's done — not just the files and the documentation, but the understanding. A small IT team or a solo sysadmin who works through a project with TAPCAVE should finish it with more expertise than they started with: enough to operate what was built, enough to extend it, and enough to apply the same thinking to the next problem. The infrastructure isn't a black box you depend on someone else to maintain. It's yours — and by the end of the engagement, you'll be able to treat it that way.
Who we work with
Startups that need serious infrastructure without the overhead of a full-time senior engineer. Small businesses whose operations have outgrown consumer-grade tools and the SaaS-for-everything model. Consultancies and MSPs who need a technical resource to fill capacity gaps and cover the infrastructure and architecture side of their projects.
Also: anyone who's looked at their cloud bill, their list of SaaS subscriptions, and the features those products quietly removed last quarter — and decided there has to be a better way to run a business.
What We Actually Believe
Digital sovereignty over hyperscaler dependency
AWS, Azure, and GCP solve real problems — at scale most businesses will never reach. For everyone else, every workload you hand them is a dependency you can't fully control, a cost you can't fully predict, and a negotiating position that weakens every year. It gets worse when the vendor gets acquired. Sun became Oracle. VMware became Broadcom. The product you built your business on becomes the asset someone else is monetizing — and your options are pay whatever they ask, or rebuild under pressure. The tools to own your own infrastructure have never been better. Most businesses just haven't been told.
Automation over tribal knowledge
Infrastructure that only works because one person remembers how it was set up is a liability. Everything TAPCAVE builds is documented and automated so any competent engineer can understand, operate, and extend it — even without having been there from the start. Handoff to your team or ongoing management by TAPCAVE — either way, the knowledge isn't locked in anyone's head.
Open systems over vendor lock-in
Platforms are chosen because they're the right and right-sized tool — reliable, functional, and fit for the actual requirements. Open source where it earns it. Commercial where it's genuinely the better answer. No reseller margins, no certification incentives, no preferred vendor relationships. Just an honest opinion about what works.
Good hardware doesn't have to be new hardware
For many smaller organizations, a two-generation-old enterprise server is a smarter investment than the latest model — half the cost, proven track record, still fully supported. Refurbished enterprise hardware means ECC RAM, redundant power, and real out-of-band management. Nothing is future-proof; we spec for the actual requirements, not for the current vendor price sheet.
Honest fit, not just getting the job
If you come in with a direction already decided, it gets a fair hearing. If the project is headed somewhere that won't serve the work well, that'll come up early. If the fit isn't there, we'll say so — and we'd rather that keep us on your short list for the next engagement than take on something that isn't set up to go well.
Where We're Coming From
The technology industry spent the last decade repackaging existing capabilities as cloud services, giving everything a new name, and calling it transformation. The FUD that commercial vendors pushed in the early 2000s — that open-source wasn't ready, wasn't supported, wasn't serious — has long since been disproven. Linux, Illumos, BSD, and macOS are among the most stable and battle-tested platforms ever built. IT professionals are comfortable at the command line. The case for paying a hyperscaler to manage what you could run yourself has gotten harder to make every year.
We still run Windows where it's called for. We just keep it in its own virtualized padded cell — for its own good.
TAPCAVE exists to close that gap. Not with buzzwords or transformation roadmaps. Infrastructure that works, automation that makes it repeatable, and someone who answers email and returns your calls.
